Now available again, this visually stunning collection of Gustav Klimt's landscape paintings brings to light a lesser-known aspect of the Viennese painter's oeuvre.

While Gustav Klimt is largely revered for his opulent, symbolladen portraits of the Viennese bourgeoisie, these works were just one aspect of his artistic expression. His landscapes represent an important facet of his career and are a valuable contribution to the school of European nature painting. For many years the artist travelled to the Austrian and Italian countryside during the summer, where he took advantage of the extraordinary light and spectacular hues to paint and sketch landscapes. Among the most exquisite of Klimt's landscapes are those in which he experimented with composition and style. Accompanied by scholarly essays, the images reproduced in this book comprise all extant landscapes from this brilliant artist, proving that his mastery extends beyond portraiture and revealing themes that appeared throughout his life's work.

"Like a similar volume of landscapes by Egon Schiele this volume has excellent reproductions of Klimt's landscapes, extensive narrative discussions and supplemental black/white photographs. An excellent piece of book-making."

  • This is an excellent art book of Viennese Symbolist Gustav Klimt's landscapes. I was more only familiar with his decorative portraits and recently discovered his landscapes, which are virtually unknown outside of Austria, and frankly some of his best work. They are an absolute joy. This is a fine art book that is comprehensive containing all known landscapes paintings of Klimt's. It traces his excursions to Lake Atter and Lake Garda In all, a total of 228 pages, with 214 color paintings, 20 duotone, and 50 black and white illustrations. Klimpt's landscape paintings were created from the 1890s until the artist's death in 1918. I suspect the colors are a bit duller than the actual paintings, but the quality of the book is very good. These works reflect his combined influences of Japanese art, Austrian landscape traditions, Van Gogh, Cezanne, and his own unique modernism. I highly recommend it. Many are in museums in Vienna, so short of a trip there (which I hope to make someday), this book will be a wonderful guide.
  • We were surprised to find, at a recent Klimt exhibition in San Francisco, that Klimt painted glorious landscapes. After seeing a few at the exhibition, we wanted to know more about them and see more of them - and this wonderful book is full of reproductions and helpful text.
  • Like a similar volume of landscapes by Egon Schiele this volume has excellent reproductions of Klimt's landscapes, extensive narrative discussions and supplemental black/white photographs. An excellent piece of book-making.
  • Best
  • Great book on a lesser known part of Klimt's ouvere. Good color reproductions.
  • The images are beautiful and the book provides an interesting overview of Klimt's work with landscape images. Gardens and village scenes are common. I enjoyed the beauty of his color and the rich textures that are typical of his work.
  • Worderful reprint of Klimt's landscape paintings and drawings that provide a clear connection with his figurative drawings and paintings.
  • Good writing, however, type is very small. The book by Eva Di Stefano is much better for about the same price
